If you are planning a visit to the town of St. Catharines be sure to schedule a stop to see the historic Welland Canal.  Stretching forty two kilometres from Port Colborne on Lake Ontario to Port Weller on Lake Erie the canal allows ships to travel through by avoiding the Niagara Falls.  Nearly forty million tonnes of cargo is carried through on ships annually.  The canal has a total of eight lift locks and watching the gigantic cargo ships go through is definitely a site to see.  The time it takes for on average for a ship to go through the entirety of the Welland Canal is eleven hours.  After watching the ships make their passage be sure to visit the Port Colborne Historical And Marine Museum to read about the history of Welland Canal
