Lack Of Affordable Housing

A major obstacle facing the homeless in Ontario is the lack of available affordable housing and the difficulty of maintaining that housing should they be lucky enough to receive it.  Many looking for homes are faced with discrimination from landlords often based on their religious or ethnic backgrounds.  Activists argue that human rights need to be clearly outlined and the public needs to be made aware that the affordable housing is a right to anyone and everyone.  Several immigrants and refugees, mentally disabled, single mothers and others spoke first hand to discriminatory acts they faced when trying to find somewhere to call home.  The Housing Resrouce Centre states that over three thousand people last year where looking for affordable housing and only 594 listings were available.  There is definitely a housing crisis in Ontario for the homeless, especially in Toronto.
